Detroit, Mich.— Marcus West, defensive tackle for the University of Memphis Tigers was named the “On the Move” player by TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®/INTERNATIONAL, Inc.
CEO and Founder Mary Ellen Sheets will present the award to West and the University of Akron recipient, Billy Sullivan, Dec. 24.
Each year, one player from each team participating in the Motor City Bowl in Detroit, Mich. is recognized for his outstanding sportsmanship in daily athletic participation, good citizenship on and off the field including community activities and leadership skills that contribute to a positive team atmosphere.
West, a senior, works with area children at the school camps and was the Defensive Player of the Year for the Tigers. He built a special relationship with one Tiger fan – a kindergartner from the area. He even visited her school, read to the class and played with them at recess. He’s a vocal player and team leader, school officials say.
"We feel it is important to recognize tomorrow's leaders and those who have a role in developing them," Sheets said, adding that TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® will also donate $1,000 to the University of Memphis Athletic Scholarship Fund. "I think this award is a great way to honor Marcus for caring about his future and the future of others."
TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® strives to be the “Mover Who Care®.’’ The company was built on a strong foundation of core values – including giving back to the community. That’s why the company contributes to each school’s athletic scholarship fund.
West, of Columbus, Miss., who anchored an injury-depleted line all year, was named to the Conference USA first-team. He was named a team co-captain for the 2005 season. He was second on the squad in sacks this season with three. He started in all 11 games this year with 39 tackles, 26 were solo stops.
West was also an honorable mention pick on the 2005 NationalChamps.net and Street & Smith's All-America teams heading into his senior season. He earned his bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies in December 2004.
TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is an international moving company that started in Lansing, Mich. The franchise system has grown to 160 locations in less than 20 years. It currently has more than 1,100 trucks on the road and is focused on exceeding customer expectations.
